Welcome PM for new members? - 12/11/2007 7:42 pmI think that a welcome PM for new members is a good idea, but I'm not sure what it should say.
My first thoughts are that it should come form the SC account, but I'm not totally sure about that either.
Any ideas?

Re:Welcome PM for new members? - 12/11/2007 10:25 pmIf we do this at all, I think it should come from a person, not the SC account (too impersonal).
Maybe the welcome message can come from a random SC member. One person might get a welcome message from me, but the next person might get the message from you, and the one after that might get Sonya, etc. I don't know if that is a hard thing to do though.
The message should be short and friendly -- just a 'hi!, glad you're here, pm me if you need anything', kind of message.

I like the idea, but perhaps the pool should be a group of SC members/site admins who volunteer for the post.
Adding a list of members and a random element is not too tough.

Re:Welcome PM for new members? - 12/18/2007 1:38 pmHere's the message we plan on putting in tonight for future new members. For now, it will come from one of three SC members (Brandy, Deborah, or Wendy).
Hello, and welcome to FA!
Thanks for joining. We've automatically added you to two associations to try and give you a bit of a start. To find more, click on the "Assn's" button at the top of the page, or you can reply to this message with your interests, and I'll send you a few more invites to get you going. If you need help other than what is provided in FA-Help, you can also reply to this message and I'll see what I can do or get it to someone who can help.

However, there should probably be a limit so that *everyone* isn't in the pool. Also, there should be some mechanism for checking up on things or complaining.
What if someone signs up for the pool and then becomes a total jerk (or does nothing) to new members???

What if someone signs up for the pool and then becomes a total jerk (or does nothing) to new members??? It sounds like we need to put rules/guidelines in place before we allow more people to help. We'd love to have the help, but I agree that we need to make sure that people are actually being helpful if needed.

Re:Welcome PM for new members? - 12/20/2007 7:23 pmI like the pool idea a lot -- and I strongly agree that it should be broadened beyond the Steering Committee. What would be really helpful is a one-page guide for potential members of the pool.
In terms of eligibility, I'd start with iniviting everyone who's posted in the last month or so. Of course there's always the risk that some people will turn into jerks ... it's just as risky in smaller groups, and a larger pool will mean that relatively fewer peole are affected if/when this happens -- and it'll be easier to find backup.
Agreed about having a way for people to give feedback. Perhaps the initial mail (once we've got a pool) could mention that this is something new we're trying, and if people run into any problems, please PM the SC alt. [Or something along those lines.]

Re:Welcome PM for new members? - 12/22/2007 7:13 pmWell to to get back to BB original post about the greeting message. FA-Help are SC/Mods members so we need to make that clear while anyone can offer up advice the FA/Mods response is official all other advice might be a disclaimer on the help page to keep the pool more clear.
