The multiple sides of audism - 11/01/2006 4:24 am
One of the many roots of the recent protests is the frustration that some protesters felt about audism on campus.
This discussion thread is meant to be for the discussion of all the multiple varieties of audism. People who are Deaf ASL users experience audism when they don't see people like themselves in high positions of authority or when they are put in a classroom with a teacher who does not sign ASL fluently. But people who are "not deaf enough" -- "deaf", hard of hearing, cochlear implant users, people who grew up oral, people who feel more comfortable with signed English than with ASL -- also experience a variety of audism when they are rejected or excluded for being "not deaf enough."
This discussion thread is for discussion related to all the varieties of audism within the Deaf/deaf/hard of hearing/deaf-blind communities, particularly at Gallaudet University.
Audism is a large, complex subject, particularly in the broad way it has been defined here. We might want to open more discussion threads later on to focus on more tightly focused subtopics. But this is just to get the ball rolling.
Remember that this discussion board is meant to be welcoming of people on ALL sides of the protests (for, against, ambivalent). This includes people with different feelings and opinions on the so-called "deaf card" issue. Please demonstrate respect to those who may feel differently than you do toward the protests.
